Rope Splicing Classes

Why: This class is perfect for folks looking to learn a unique & valuable skill that requires human hands to execute

 

What is Rope Splicing? Splicing is a way of terminating a rope or joining two ends of rope together without using a knot

Why is Rope Splicing a thing? 

- To retain rope strength & reduce bulk created by knots 

- Tying knots in rope reduce rope strength by ~50%

- Splicing rope (in lieu of tying knots) retains 90%-100% of rope strength 

What you will learn:

- Similarities & Differences between common ropes

- How to execute a Class 1 Double Braid Splice 

- How to execute a Class 1 Hollow Braid Splice 

- Arborists taking the class will be given the opportunity to turn their projects into working tools for tree climbing & rigging (the spliced rope is part of the class fee & will belong to the attendee)

- Non Arborists taking the class will be given the opportunity to turn their projects into working leashes & leads for pets (the spliced rope is part of the class fee & will belong to the attendee

Class Structure: 

- All classes are taught by David Ricks & have a student teacher ratio of 4:1

- You will be standing & sitting intermittently while using basic hand tools, tying knots in rope, pulling both thin & thick rope

- You will be given the opportunity to purchase any of the tools used in the class (we will also provide links to products used during the class should you wish to purchase at online retailers) 

 

When: 2 class offerings in Jan 2023

1. Rope Splicing Class A: $40 for a total of 4 hours of training during 1 class. 4 spots available for each class. 

Class Date & Time: Sunday 1/8 (8am to 12pm)

2. Rope Splicing Class B: $40 for a total of 4 hours of training during 1 class. 4 spots available for each class. 

Class Date & Time: Sunday 1/22 (8am to 12pm)

This class is held INSIDE a shop headed with a wood stove 

What to Bring & Wear:

- Water & Snacks

- Any hardware you wish to capture in the rope splices 

Age & Ability Range:

- Classes designed for ages 15 and up 

- Folks younger than 15 can attend the class with an adult that will help the child follow along in the class

- Both the adult & the child should pay the class fee

Risk: 
- We will be using basic cutting tools (scissors & hot knives) & sewing tools (needles & sail palms) 

- We will be providing & using proper personal protective equipment

Waiver: 

- All participants will be required to sign a physical copy of our Waiver prior to participating in Classes or Events.

- Minors will require a guardian's signature
